Balanced Portfolio

The balanced portfolio approach is popular for various investor types, including people investing to grow wealth for periods of under ten years, people approaching retirement, and people who for other reasons accept lower expected return to have lower risk. This approach often involves investing 30% to 50% in bonds or ETFs that own bonds, and the rest in stocks or ETFs that own stocks. Compared to Growth Portfolios, a mix with a greater amount in bonds is expected to make the bumpy ride even smoother, but the reduced amount in stocks also reduces expected long-term returns.

Below is an example of a balanced portfolio with a blend of 60% in ETFs that own stocks, and 40% in ETFs that own bonds. Investors can set up this type of portfolio by selecting one or more ETFs in each ETF Category, using information in the Member Zone – ETF & Stock Screener, listing the largest ETFs in each Category of ETFs and the data including ETF size, fees, yield (or income), past performance and more. Some investors may want to adjust the amount in some ETF Categories, such as adjusting International Stocks higher or lower than 10% or adjusting U.S. Bonds higher or lower than 40%.

U.S. Value ETFs10%
U.S. Dividend ETFs10%
